Currently, a new digital content selling platform is trending among Japanese bloggers. The platform, “note” is a Medium like blogging service which allows us to sell text post, image post, sound file and movie. Here is how “note” changed the way of selling text contents.
Some famous bloggers and online media writer recently made it public that they got big revenue from “note”. For example, Mr. Hayato Ikeda, one of the most famous professional blogger said, on his blog, he is earning 500 USD from own paid magazine with 5 USD monthly subscription every day. While Mr. Yuhei Umeki, the founder of online media, THE STARTUP, earned 10,000 USD from own 30 USD magazine.
Why “note” could create such revenue
As Mr. Umeki pointed out, when we try to sell text contents, we needed the form of ebook or newsstand magazine. This context forces digital contents to have an accepted form and price as a paper media.
On the other hand, contents on “note” doesn’t have such context. Because “note” shows contents like Tumblr and Medium. And it provides writers with selling with a new price range from about 1 USD to 100 USD as paid contents or monthly subscription. In addition to it, the design as SNS seems to succeed bonding readers with writers.
This fact that a platform which has different UX changed the activity of consumption of media is so interesting. When I buy movie contents, it’s always a comparison with the price of Hollywood movie contents. When we buy sound contents, it’s always a comparison with the price of song on itunes store. If we could redesign UX of such contents, there will be a redefinition of existing value.
